Vertigo & Balance

Overview

Getting to the Root Cause of Your Dizziness

A sudden spinning sensation, unsteadiness while walking, or a feeling that the room is tilting can be frightening, and it often has nothing to do with the brain at all. In most cases, the cause lies in the inner ear, which plays a major role in maintaining balance. At RISHI ENT, we carry out a focused vertigo evaluation to pinpoint the exact cause and plan treatment accordingly, rather than simply prescribing medicines for the symptoms.

Vertigo & Balance Tests
  • Functional Head Impulse Test (F-HIT): A quick test that checks how well the inner ear balance system responds to head movement.
  • Video Nystagmography (VNG): Records eye movements to assess the inner ear and central nervous system's role in balance.
  • Detailed Vertigo Evaluation: A structured assessment combining history, examination and testing to identify the exact cause of dizziness.
  • Epley and Repositioning Manoeuvres: Simple, effective head movement techniques used to treat BPPV without medicines.

FAQs on Vertigo & Balance

A large number of vertigo cases originate from the inner ear, but not all. Proper evaluation helps identify whether the cause is in the ear, the balance nerve, or elsewhere.

No. Many cases, especially BPPV, respond very well to simple repositioning manoeuvres and do not need long term medication.

VNG involves wearing special goggles that track eye movement while you follow certain visual and positional tests. It is painless and generally well tolerated.

It can, particularly with conditions like BPPV, but recurrences are usually managed quickly once the pattern is recognised.
